Our Mission & Vision in Winchester Chaplaincy
is to be the loving, compassionate, and consistent presence of God in the economic civic life and social life of Winchester. We strive to offer a vital space for spiritual and pastoral care, reconciliation, and support within the marketplace, acting as a bridge between faith communities and the daily realities of city life.
Our four priorities are to
Listen to communities,
Serve with humility & compassion,
Support well-being (spiritual, emotional, social)
Respond to needs through prayerful & united action.
Our Values
Confidentiality: Maintaining absolute trust in all our conversations.
Inclusivity: Serving people of all faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds without prejudice.
Impartiality: Operating independently of any business or civic body.
Compassion: Providing kindness and care in all our interactions.
Where We Work
Our volunteer chaplains are regularly out and about (we wear a bright yellow lanyard with Chaplain), providing a visible and approachable presence across a variety of sectors:
The Justice System: Providing vital pastoral support to staff, defendants, witnesses, and families within the Crown Court system.
Retail & Business: Visiting staff and managers in shops, offices, and financial institutions to offer conversation and support.
Public Services & Transport: Spending time at the Winchester City Council offices, the library, the bus station, and the drivers’ canteens.
Using local Churches to run cafe, listening services, and other events

How we do it:
We have time to listen. People can talk about personal things, family concerns or work-related issues. We are not employees of any business in the city so we can provide an independent listening ear. We complement other welfare and counselling agencies.
Where we do it:
Beyond our regular workplace visits, we offer dedicated services to the broader community:
In our local businesses and places of employment
Local Church buildings
The Listening Service Drop-In: A free, fortnightly drop-in held at St Lawrence’s Church. This offers a safe space for adults to discuss personal difficulties, relationships, bereavement, or mental health struggles with a trained listener. (Runs every first and third Tuesday of the month, 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm.)
TakeTime Meditation Sessions: A monthly guided meditation and reflection session held at St Lawrence’s Church, offering a calm, contemplative space for those of all faiths and none to pause and find peace. (Runs every fourth Wednesday of the month, 2:30pm to 3:30pm.). Starting soon a monthly on-line evening session, possibly on the same Wednesday TBC).
Prayer Meetings: We host a welcoming prayer meeting first Thursday every month early morning on line and in person12.30-1.30pm at Hope church inviting partners to pray for the city, its communities and any employees who desire it.
